Becoming a Realtor

Many of you have asked me what it is like to become a realtor and the process. Well today is your lucky day! I am going to discuss the ins and out of the business and how I got to where I am today.

You might have heard many people say that real estate is a great business to get into. Yes, this is true, but it does takes time to get to that point of success. To begin the whole process of becoming a new agent, one must first take the class. You can either take the class online, like I did, or in a classroom. The class can cost anywhere from $500 and up, I would estimate closer to 600. Once you have completed the class you must take two tests and pass. One is the Indiana exam and one is a National exam. You must pay to take the tests as well. I would estimate around 70 to 100 dollars for the exam. If you fail, you can retake it. After you have passed both tests, you can officially say that you are a licensed realtor.

Now it is time to start speaking with different companies to see which you might want to work with. I first started out on F.C. Tucker on my aunts team, the Bif Ward Team but am not independent. If you know anyone who has a team, I would suggest speaking with them about possibly joining. If you decided that being on a team is not your thing, you can always be an independent agent.

Once you make a decision and become employed with a company, the next step is start working. At F.C. Tucker, we were provided with a 12 week class to help teach us the ins and outs of the business and how to be successful. I am sure other companies offer the same. Whether the company you choose does or not, I have a few recommendations.

Being a realtor isn't easy. Most likely you will be on straight commission meaning you will not get a pay check unless you create a sale. It take a certain type of person to do this job. You must be dedicated and hard working. That being said you must get the word out there and let people know you are a realtor. This business is strictly a referral business.
